About the Press
Bull City Press, an independent, volunteer-run small press based in North Carolina, was born in 2006. We publish chapbooks and occasionally full-length books of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction, as well as the quarterly journal Inch. We also host events, including two reading series, in the Durham/Chapel Hill area of North Carolina and beyond; a podcast; an incubator program for new journals, presses, podcasts, and literary ventures; and occasional virtual readings. We love readers, and we love writers. We want to make sure they find each other.
Bull City Press has a passion for the unusual, the surprising, and the arresting, but what we love most is the miracle of compression. Whether it’s poetry, fiction, or creative nonfiction—a Bull City Press book is small but mighty. So that we can both pay the writers we publish and keep readers’ costs low, we are staffed entirely by volunteers. No one draws a salary from the press, so we can put all proceeds into creating new chapbooks. You can find more information on our staff here.
Our logo and our mascot, Barry the Bull, were designed by Flying Hand Studio. They also designed most of our books before 2017. Many of our titles are now designed by Spock & Associates.
Through a partnership with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, we give students the chance to learn editing, design, and publishing skills by working on Bull City Press titles. Students have provided invaluable feedback to authors, created book jackets and interiors, and developed marketing materials for several books.
While we started with a mostly-poetry approach, we launched a line of fiction and nonfiction chapbooks when we merged with Origami Zoo Press in 2015.
